In ‘Connecting Utopia’, a solo exhibition by celebrated Indigenous artist Betty Club Mbitjana, the artist’s skills blossom, both figuratively and literally in the manner of brilliantly colored and formed acrylic paintings on canvas. These recent paintings are exquisitely finished, yet also have dynamic qualities of traditional meaning and significance. Betty Mbitjana is the daughter of acclaimed artist Minnie Pwerle (deceased) and sister of the well known artist, Barbara Weir. Betty tells the exclusive story passed down by her mother of ‘Aweyle’, or Bush Melon. This Dreaming celebrates Betty’s love and respect for the land and the food it provides the people. Awelye-Atnwengerrp is depicted by a series of lines painted in different widths, patterns and colours. This pattern represents the designs painted on the top half of the women’s bodies during ceremonies in their country of Atnwengerrp. Food, in the form of bush melons and seeds, are also represented. Married to Paddy Club, Betty is respectful of her family ties and possesses a great passion for painting and is honoured to be carrying on her mother’s beliefs and Dreamings, as well as skillfully interpreting her own. Betty is an extremely talented artist and works her colours brilliantly onto the canvas in the unique energetic style that is so reminiscent of her famous mother. Now a highly collectable artist in her own right, Betty’s works are increasing rapidly in popularity and value, as their presence in many major private and public collections will attest.
